History & Purpose

The Excellence Scholarship Program is designed to give outstanding first-year students added financial assistance to attend The University of Virginia. The scholarship is merit-based and is designed for outstanding Filipino-American first-year students who have demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to OYFA and its goals, have excelled in their academic studies, and demonstrate financial need.

The award shall be presented annually (based on available funds) to a qualified student in the spring semester of his/her first year. Applications will be submitted to the OYFA Executive Board for review in March and the awardee shall be determined 2 weeks prior to the presentation. The scholarship must be claimed and used for the upcoming semester, otherwise the scholarship will lapse.

Winners of the scholarship shall be asked to contribute to the program as soon as they graduate from college. This is a way for them to express their appreciation to The Organization of Young Filipino-Americans for its generous contributions to the recipient's college education. Phase II of the scholarship program will include expansion to provide scholarships for incoming Filipino-American students who plan to attend The University of Virginia depending upon availability of funds.

Funding for the scholarship will be raised through contributions from OYFA alumni, OYFA members and friends, OYFA parents, and businesses. The scholarship program will be coursed through the Alumni Association, under the guidance of Mrs. Bonnie Ford, Associate Director of the UVA Fund, 434-243-9000, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
